Bacterial biofilms are found in many porous materials. Dorothee Kurz’s paper is now published in Proceedings of the National Academic of Sciences. In collaboration with colleagues from Princeton University, we show that the competition between hydrodynamics and microbial growth governs the opening and closing of preferential flow paths.
